Client: High-Volume Intermodal Hub
Introduction
Our port and rail experts led a focused operational intervention to recover suppressed throughput at a high-volume intermodal hub — delivering measurable gains in driver wait times, equipment availability, and throughput without capital expansion.
The Challenge
The terminal was experiencing persistent driver delays and equipment availability failures, with conventional analysis pointing toward physical capacity constraints as the cause. Our team’s diagnostic revealed the real problem: flow breakdowns and handoff gaps operating without defined accountability — not infrastructure limits.
What We Did
- Diagnosed persistent driver delays and equipment availability failures as products of flow breakdowns and handoff gaps rather than physical capacity constraints.
- Added a dedicated coordination role for truck-driver flip activity, improving sequencing and clarifying ownership at critical handoff points.
- Redesigned targeted processes to restore equipment readiness and reduce wait time, recovering capacity within the existing operational footprint.
Results
Driver wait times materially reduced, equipment availability improved, and throughput increased using the same assets, workforce, and gate capacity — demonstrating that structured oversight and coordination discipline can deliver measurable results faster than capital investment.
